Professor John Ludden CBE FRSE is the president of the International Union of Geosciences (IUGS) and Bicentennial Research Professor at Heriot-Watt University in Environmental governance. This follows 13 years as the Chief Executive of the British Geological Survey and a career in universities and national research agencies in Canada, USA, the UK and France. His roles have ranged from research and teaching to strategic leadership and management in the natural resources sector. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Geological Society of London, a chartered Geologist and Member of Academia Europaea (AE) and a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the honour of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2016 for contributions to geosciences.
