D.M.Banerjee, received his education at Lucknow University and obtained M.Sc. degree in 1962 and Ph. D. degree in 1967. He served the Geological Survey for couple of years before joining Delhi University in 1970. As a Fellow of the British Council, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and Japan Society of Promotion of Science, he carried out advance research in the field of Proterozoic and Cambrian sedimentology, stratigraphy, sedimentary and stable isotope geochemistry, predominantly of the phosphate rocks. He was a founder member and coordinator of one of the most successful IGCP-156 project on Phosphorite which ran for one full decade. For IGC-386 he served as a global co-leader. As a collaborative work with the University College London, he contributed substantially to our understanding of the nature of arsenic pollution in the groundwater of Bengal Delta Plains. He supervised 15 Ph.D. thesis during his teaching and administrative tenure before his retirement in 2007. He received Prof.R.C.Misra Life Time Achievement Gold Medal in 2016 and D N Wadia Gold Medal of Indian National Science Academy in 2021. He was elected to the Fellowhip of the Geological Society of India in 1967 and the Indian National Science Academy in 2000. In the same year he received National Mineral Award of Government of India. He served as INSA Senior Scientist and Honorary Scientist till 2018 and now functioning as an INSA Emeritus Scientist. He is a Member of the present INSA Council, chaired several National and International scientific meetings and committees. He is a member of the UNESCO-IGCP Scientific Board. As Chair of the Indian National Committee for IUGS , he led the Indian Delegation to 34th IGC at Brisbane in 2012 where India won the bid to host 36th IGC in India. He is one of the key member involved in the organization of the 36th International Geological Congress 2020 which will now be held as a Virtual Congress in March 2022. He serves as Editor or Member of Editorial Boards of several national and international Scientific Journals. He has done field investigations in many parts of the globe and represented India in geological meetings and conferences. He has published over 200 scientific papers and articles in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports. Apart from several Edited Volumed he is one of the three authors of a book” Tectonics of the Indian Subcontinent published by Springer.
